Experimental 5G/6G Energy Efficiency, Dynamic Spectrum Access, Smart antennas, Propagation, Techno-Economics
We are a government co-funded leading African R&D organisation specialising in applied telecommunications research, with proven "first-on-the-continent" and "first-in-the-world" innovations. Our substantial expertise in wireless telecom systems covers the following key areas:
1) Experimental Research in Wireless Telecom Systems:
Experimental research and evaluation of energy efficiency in 5G/6G networks, including practical trials and testbed demonstrations using OpenAirInterface (OAI) and srsRAN, emphasizing energy efficiency optimization, also including smart antennas.
2) Smart Spectrum Management and Dynamic Spectrum Access:
Research, development and regulatory leadership in Dynamic Spectrum Access (TV White Space, now also including 5G/6G), including national-scale trials and geolocation spectrum database/GLSD implementation certified by OfCom and adopted for commercial operation nationally.
3) Techno-Economic Analysis and Open Telecom Infrastructure:
Comprehensive techno-economic research and policy support, particularly focusing on open telecom infrastructure models (Open RAN). Our analyses support the adoption and localization of open telecom solutions, facilitating regional and economic development.
4) Field Deployment and Practical Expertise, now stretching to NTN:
Leveraging extensive practical experience from large-scale Wi-Fi mesh and TVWS trials and deployments, our team is skilled in supporting technology trials, from field trials and network design to deployment and policy support. We are developing deployment and regulatory support for Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN), including satellite-based rural connectivity trials.

Brief description of my Organisation
The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is a leading scientific and technology research organisation that researches, develops, localises and diffuses technologies to accelerate socioeconomic prosperity in South Africa. The organisation’s work contributes to industrial development and supports a capable state.
The CSIR was established through an Act of Parliament in 1945 and the organisation’s executive authority is the Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation.
The organisation plays a key role in supporting public and private sectors through directed research that is aligned with the country’s priorities, the organisation’s mandate and its science, engineering and technology competences.
Impact is at the core of our business and the following objectives are crafted to ensure that we achieve our mission:
* Conduct research, development and innovation of transformative technologies and accelerate their diffusion;
* Improve the competitiveness of high-impact industries to support South Africa’s re-industrialisation by collaboratively developing, localising and implementing technology;
* Drive socioeconomic transformation through RD&I that supports the development of a capable state;
* Build and transform human capital and infrastructure; and
* Diversify income, and maintain financial sustainability and good governance.
