Real-time flow and density measurement of gaseous streams
The Friction Flowmeter is a novel flow and physical property measurements solution based on existing commercial measurement technology used alongside company retained IP. The hybrid system utilises differential pressure technology and an input from any other measurement solution to offer a flexible solution to deliver more than the sum of its parts.
Originally developed to solve Reynolds number effects associated with high viscosity liquids, the technology has been adapted to operate with gases. One recent test programme has combined a Venturi flowmeter with an ultrasonic system that allows for calculation of real-time density as well as fluid Speed of Sound. Both parameters provide information about the composition of the stream with the test programme indicating Hydrogen content of a blended natural gas stream with up to 20% Hydrogen.
Likely the technology can be pushed much further in terms of operating range. Additionally, the same process could be utilised in carbon dioxide streams to estimate the level of impurities present. including additional sensors i.e. pressure recovery, it is likely to determine the phase of the contaminants also.
The Friction Flowmeter for gases is currently at TRL5 with work ongoing to develop it further and create a computation system with hazardous area approvals for field trials. For any flow measurement challenge, even those not requiring the Friction Flowmeter, please get in touch as I can provide expert assistance in this field.
