Bio-Based High Solid Alkyds with Hemp Oil for Low-VOC Coatings
Growing environmental concerns and increasingly strict VOC regulations are driving the coatings industry towards sustainable and low-emission binder technologies. In response to this challenge, this project focuses on the development of bio-based high-solid alkyd resins derived from hemp oil for use in low-VOC and environmentally friendly coating systems.
Alkyd resins are widely used in the paint and coatings industry due to their excellent film-forming properties, ease of application and good adhesion. However, conventional alkyd resins typically contain high amounts of organic solvents, leading to significant VOC emissions that pose serious risks to environmental quality and human health. In line with regulations such as EU Directive 2004/42/EC, the industry is shifting towards low-emission and sustainable binder systems.
High-solid alkyd resins offer an attractive alternative, as their low viscosity enables formulation with minimal solvent content while maintaining key coating properties such as gloss and durability. Within the scope of this project, bio-based high-solid alkyd resins will be synthesized using hemp oil combined with various air-drying vegetable fatty acids. Hemp oil represents an environmentally advantageous renewable resource due to its carbon dioxide absorption during growth and its contribution to soil remediation.
The developed resins will be characterized using analytical techniques such as FT-IR, and coating formulations based on these resins will be evaluated in terms of drying behavior, gloss, hardness, yellowing resistance, outdoor durability and anticorrosive performance.
The project aims to deliver sustainable, low-VOC and HAP-free alkyd resins suitable for industrial coating applications, contributing to the advancement of environmentally friendly coating technologies and providing an innovative solution in the field of sustainable material development.
